Abstract
Las series de televisión y las películas cinematográficas se transmiten cada vez en inglés por medio de audiosy escritos subtitulados, con lo que se masifica el empleo, la selección y el aprendizaje de la lengua inglesa.El objetivo de este artículo es desentramar desde el decolonialismo lingüístico la manera en que se imponesocioculturalmente el inglés como una opción natural. Metodológicamente, se trata de un estudio cualitativo,que recurre a entrevistas realizadas a traductores, profesores de idiomas y estudiantes peruanos. El artículoconcluye que la demanda de subtítulos facilita la enseñanza del inglés como práctica colonial por lo que seproponen alternativas, algunas básicas y otras profundas, frente a su masiva difusión.
Television series and movies are increasingly being broadcast in English through subtitled audio and writtenmaterial, thus increasing the use, selection and learning of the English language. The objective of thisarticle is to unravel, from the perspective of linguistic decolonialism, how English is socioculturally imposedas a natural choice. Methodologically, this is a qualitative study, using interviews with Peruvian translators,language teachers and students. The article concludes that the demand for subtitles facilitates teachingEnglish as a colonial practice and proposes decolonizing alternatives, some descriptive and other critical, inthe face of its massive diffusion.
