- ItemEvidentiality in Middle Classical Tibetan.(2024) Oisel, Guillaume Yannick Serge. This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of Evidentiality in Middle Classical Tibetan. This is of great importance since Middle Classical Tibetan is the oldest system in typological studies yet identified that uses evidentiality beginning in at least the 15th century. This article also highlights the distinction between the notions of information source and information access in an evidential system. By using a morphosyntactic approach, the usage of evidentiality can be properly described in that language. Specifically, certain types of highly complex copula and auxiliary verb constructions, which had not been previously analyzed, can be used to demonstrate how evidentiality is grammaticalized in Middle Classical Tibetan. This approach avoids the pitfalls of lexical-only analyses, which have previously not been able to support a comprehensive and accurate description of evidentiality. Further, the intricate interaction between evidentiality, aspect, and epistemic modality reveals the subtlety and complexity of the system. Finally, the interaction between evidentiality and politeness register, reveals discursive complex social relationships which have not been previously described and the importance of social deixis in the study of evidentiality.
- ItemOn the origin of the Lhasa Tibetan evidentials song and byung.(De Gruyter, 2017) Oisel, Guillaume Yannick Serge. This contribution presents the emergence of some Lhasa Tibetan evidentials from Middle Tibetan deictic motion verb and other. More specifically, it traces the origin of the ‘receptive egophoric’ and ‘sensorial’ past tense markers byungand song from the Middle Tibetan verbs byung ‘to come forth, to occur’ and song ‘to go’. Hongladarom (1995) also mentions the origin of these evidentials, but without providing philological details of the these verbs as they are used throug-hout Tibet’s literary history. I fill this gap by presenting three verbal systems that display discrete stages in this evolution: Middle Tibetan (a 15th century bio-graphy), Modern Literary Tibetan (2 genres, newspapers and tales), and Lhasa Tibetan. Although Modern Literary Tibetan is not diachronically intermediate between Middle Tibetan and Standard Colloquial Tibetan, its generic conserva-tism allows it to be used as such
- ItemRe-evaluation of the evidential system of Lhasa Tibetan and its atypical functions.(2018) Oisel, Guillaume Yannick Serge. This paper presents a re-evaluation of the Lhasa Tibetan Evidentials and focuses on its atypical functions with control verbs. I present the use of the intentional egophoric with non-SAPs and control verbs when the speaker refers to personal knowledge and I discuss some of its restrictions. Then, I present the atypical uses of the sensorial, factual and inferential evidentials. Some of these functions have been previously noted by Agha (1993), Tournadre (1994, 1996, 2003), Denwood (1999), Garrett (2001), Vokurková (2008) and DeLancey (1985, 1997, 2001). Based on Tournadre’s analysis (2003), in which he explains the correlation between the egophoric and intentionality, I show in this paper that when the degree of intentionality is either not involved (but not unintentional) or is only partly involved, the sensorial, factual and inferential can be used with the SAP and control verbs. I also present the notion of intentionality out of focus and lower intentionality to describe these two cases. Then, I treat ‘intentionality out of focus’ in greater detail, showing that one can distinguish five different ways of reducing the focus on intentionality.
